Research within the Laboratory for laser sintering is directed towards the synthesis of metallic materials, as well as metal-ceramics and metal-polymer composites by consolidation of homogenized and mechanically alloyed powders using laser energy. This method enables synthesis of new materials or materials with improved characteristics compared to the ones obtained by conventional techniques. Extreme conditions during the action of laser pulse, such as very rapid heating and cooling cycles which otherwise can not be attained, lead to unique processes and structures that are a subject of scientific studies worldwide. Regarding the practical application, laser sintering/melting is a basis for technology which enables the production of limited series of parts with small dimensions and complex shape, used e.g. in medicine and electronics.
